Southeast of Inverness, Florida is Floral City with a population of a little over 5,000 people. The community is home to the Floral City Heritage Hall Museum, the famous Ferris Groves Citrus Farm, and hosts the Floral City Strawberry Festival as well as the Floral City Heritage Days the first weekend in December. The area has a history of phosphate mining and includes many historic homes.

Floral City is located at the south end of Tsala Apopka Lake, a chain of lakes and wetlands that are part of the Withlacoochee River basin. The town is located at the middle of the Withlacoochee State Trail, a linear state park that follows an old railroad line. It is currently the longest paved trail in Florida at 46 miles. The trail is used primarily for bicycling.

During the late 1880’s, Floral City was larger than Miami, due to the phosphate mining industry located in Citrus County. Around the time of World War I, the mining industry shut down in Floral City and many of the people left.

Since 1993 the Floral City Heritage Council has sponsored and managed the annual Floral City Heritage Days. This educational event is held the first weekend in December, beginning Friday evenings. Floral City Heritage Council volunteers dress in period costume of the 1890s and act as guides to the historic home tours and the museum/country store.

The ever-popular Floral City Blue Banner Tour of Historic Homes is presented once a year during Heritage Days on the first Saturday in December. Owners open their homes to visitors who may view the restored structures, presenting a unique opportunity to see the home interiors of days gone by.

Historic markers can be found on buildings within the Floral City Historic District, which was listed in 1993 on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. This is the only Historic District on the National Register within Citrus County.

The community is said to be a slice of "Old Florida" that remains relatively intact. The town was named Floral City for its abundance of wild flowers, which are still plentiful today.

Floral City offers lots of wide open space and plenty of acreage for horse lovers. Whether you are looking to buy an existing home with horse barn, pastures and equestrian facilities or build your own horse paradise on a perfect piece of land with rich, fertile soil, Floral City has plenty of options at real bargains.
